Tips for Ethical Couponing

In order to keep couponing fun for everyone, there are some guidelines that must be followed.

Here are a few tips:

-Coupons are distributed by manufacturers. Retailers are reimbursed by the manufacturers plus the cost of handling.

-Some stores have their own coupons, called a "store coupon".  You can use a store coupon with a manufacturer coupon-this is called, "stacking".  If you read the fine print on a coupon, you can determine whether it is a "store" coupon or a "manufacturer" coupon.

- Read the find print on a coupon and make sure to use it as the wording states.  Check the quantity, size, etc so that you are not denied at the register.  I've made this mistake plenty of times, often when I pick up the wrong size.

-Don't ever photocopy coupons, printable or otherwise!  Photocopying coupons is coupon fraud.  Retailers are only reimbursed for legitimate coupons.  Many stores are reducing the number of printable coupons they accept because people are using counterfeit coupons.

When your cashier is scrutinizing a printable coupon, it is because he or she is checking for the watermark.  If you print a coupon from coupons.com, the watermark is in the expiration date box(either light yellow dots, if in color, or light gray dots, if printed in black and white).
