Food Lion Deals!

Every once in a while, Food Lion has some bargains.  Their "Big Deal" promotion is going on now through Oct. 25.  Here's what I scored today:

4 14oz. boxes Cheerios
2 boxes Kelloggs Fiber Plus Cereal
4 Pillsbury Biscuit Sandwich
8 Yoplait Greek Yogurt
2 Pillsbury Orange Rolls

Not on their Big Deal Sale:

4 Steamfresh Vegetables
2 All Detergent

I also bought meat(discounted) and snacks for school lunches(without coupons!).

Total items:  36
Spent:  $40.71
Coupons Tendered:  $46.86

Click here to find all of the coupon match-ups I used. There is a forum for Food Lion on WeUseCoupons.com

A few notes about shopping at Food Lion:

-Make a list of the Big Deal items you are planning to buy or grab a Big Deal Flier by the register/customer service-it has all of the Big Deal items listed for you.

-Make sure you get the right sized item(for example, there are 3 sizes of Cheerios boxes, make sure you get the one that is tagged for the Big Deal)

-The weekly ad is somewhat confusing.  I really had to pay attention to what was a Big Deal item versus what was just on sale.

-Make sure you have the correct increment of items.  You have to buy either 10, 20, or 30 items to get either $5, $10 or $15 back.  One way to help keep track is to place ten items at a time in your reusable bags as you shop.  It's easier to count ten items at a time than thirty.

Sound confusing?  It's designed that way.  You have to pay attention in order to get the best deals.  Since I don't usually shop at Food Lion, I had to go up and down each aisle to find everything.  Make sure you leave yourself enough time to shop.

Free Events in the New River Valley

There are many free upcoming events in the New River Valley.  Too many for me to list.  Click here to check out Next Three Days for a mega-list of events.

Our personal favorites are:

RU Appalachian Folk Arts Festival:  Oct. 15, 10am-4pm
Hokie Bug Fest: Oct. 15, 10am-5pm

Honey Bunches of Oats $1.25 per box. No coupons needed!

I stopped by Walgreen's today to check out this great deal on Honey Bunches of Oats cereal.  Here's the scenario:
Buy 4 boxes Honey Bunches of Oats (any variety)
Pay $8
Get back a $3 Register Reward to be used toward your next purchase.
Total:  $5 for 4 boxes of cereal or $1.25 per box

This is reportedly working on other varieties of Post cereals.

I don't like to pay more than $1 per box of cereal but I haven't been able to find a great deal on cereal for quite some time.  We've been eating a lot of oatmeal around here, so my kids will be happy!

Tips for Ethical Couponing

In order to keep couponing fun for everyone, there are some guidelines that must be followed.

Here are a few tips:

-Coupons are distributed by manufacturers. Retailers are reimbursed by the manufacturers plus the cost of handling.

-Some stores have their own coupons, called a "store coupon".  You can use a store coupon with a manufacturer coupon-this is called, "stacking".  If you read the fine print on a coupon, you can determine whether it is a "store" coupon or a "manufacturer" coupon.

- Read the find print on a coupon and make sure to use it as the wording states.  Check the quantity, size, etc so that you are not denied at the register.  I've made this mistake plenty of times, often when I pick up the wrong size.

-Don't ever photocopy coupons, printable or otherwise!  Photocopying coupons is coupon fraud.  Retailers are only reimbursed for legitimate coupons.  Many stores are reducing the number of printable coupons they accept because people are using counterfeit coupons.

When your cashier is scrutinizing a printable coupon, it is because he or she is checking for the watermark.  If you print a coupon from coupons.com, the watermark is in the expiration date box(either light yellow dots, if in color, or light gray dots, if printed in black and white).
Check it out by printing the new high value Aveeno coupon above-just click the image!

Sources for Printable Coupons

Did you know that there are many online sources for printable coupons?

This is great because it means that you don't necessarily have to subscribe to any newspaper to cash in on the savings.  Printables alone can really help you to save a lot of money.

Is it worth the printer ink?  I think so, especially if it's a high dollar printable.

You can set your printer to print the coupons in the "draft" and/or to print only in black and white to make your ink go farther.

Here are my favorite online sources:
